  The rivalry with Francis I gets an absurd 21st-century upgrade when Henry discovers the French President is visiting London, and he gate-crashes the state banquet to challenge him to a wrestling match, completely oblivious to diplomatic protocol. He spends the entire novel obsessively checking social media to see if Francis is getting more likes, and he commissions a modern portrait of himself that is designed to be "more glorious" than anything the French can produce. This petty, one-sided competition is a running gag that highlights his fragile masculinity and his inability to let go of a grudge that is almost 500 years old.
